Spring Cleansing: A recipe for you.

Apr. 28, 2024

Spring is here with brighter and longer days and sunshine that feels like it finally has some oomph. According to Ayurveda, India’s ancient wisdom science of health and healing, eating seasonally is key to longevity and vitality. In Spring, we are guided to lean into our natural rhythm of detoxification and cleansing by turning to lighter foods that stoke and balance our digestive fire, easing the heaviness and density of winter just as the snow melts into running rivers.

Here is a simple recipe for a delicious soup to enjoy in the Springtime. Our focus is to favour the bitter, pungent and astringent tastes found in seasonal greens; bright berries, fresh ginger, turmeric and spicy soups.

Spinach Vitality Soup for Spring

I love this green soup. It feels like sipping on a warm, savory greensmoothie full of revitalizing vitamins and iron. The warm thyme and pungent garlic helps to balance out spinach’s cooling astringency. Add this to your rotation of weekly recipes to gain lots of vitality.
Course: Soup
Cuisine: American
Servings: 3
Author: Insiya Rasiwala-Finn

Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 1 very large bunch fresh spinach
  • ½ onion thinly sliced
  • 2 garlic cloves sliced
  • 2 tbsp cold pressed extra virgin coconut oil
  • 3 cups warmed organic chicken or veggie broth
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp Sea salt
  • 1 A generous sprig of Thyme

Instructions

  • In a soup pot, warm the oil on medium heat until it melts. Meanwhile, wash, drain and rinse the spinach.
  • Add in the sliced onion, garlic and thyme. Saute until softened and onion is translucent.
  • Now add in the spinach, saute quickly until the spinach is wilted and soft. This will only take a few minutes so pay attention.
  • Add in 2 cups of the warmed broth.
  • Blend with either an immersion blender in the soup pot, or in a high speed upright blender until the soup has a smooth consistency. It should be a beautiful vibrant green color. (Do not fill an upright blender more than halfway, to prevent any accidents)!
  • Season to taste. If needed add a little more broth until the soup is to the constancy you prefer.
  • Serve with a little dollop of cultured butter, or a little bit of olive oil or ghee. Enjoy.

Notes

This soup is Tri doshic as the warmth of spices and broth helps to alleviate the cooling effect of spinach. It is a wonderful soup to amplify digestion.
