I just returned back to Vancouver and Ucluelet from a visit to a city I still call Bombay – my birthplace and former home town. Amongst the highlights were; spending time with family + friends, teaching some Blissology + Yoga workshops at Yoga Sutra, researching more spas for an upcoming Asia Spa magazine feature on Bombay spas; and casting my “eagle eye” over the yoga alignment at a Vogue, India photoshoot featuring local yoga instructors, that fortuitously enough, a friend from Vancouver, the super-talented Martin Prihoda, was shooting. Drinking tea is both my favorite morning ritual to welcome in a day as well as my nightcap of choice after a meal, perfect post a yoga practice and sometimes before one. And I am not alone, hundreds of millions of people around the world drink tea, approximately 9 billion in Canada alone. We continue to imbibe this most ancient of human beverages, one that owes its appearance to a chance meeting of leaves and hot water in the China of almost 500,000 years ago.
Contrary to popular belief, an oh-too-sweet chai latte at Starbucks is really not the same as a cup of home-brewed “masala” chai, which is what I grew up with in India. You simmer a varying combination of delicious spices that warm up milk into a balancing brew that’s perfect for a cold winter day, something I love especially here in the damp climate of the Pacific Northwest.
