Fortify and Glow: Ayurvedic Healing Wisdom to Nourish the New Mother and Baby
“A new mother should be treated with massage, warm baths, a specific diet and herbal drinks that prevent infection, promote vitality and alleviate vata.”
From the Charaka Samhita, one of Ayurveda’s texts dating to circa 400 BCE.
The dramatic transition that occurs when an expectant woman becomes a mother, is unlike anything else we experience in our lives. And while we acknowledge the rigorous and demanding act of birth, in our western culture, we often focus our attention solely on the baby’s comfort and adaptation to life outside the womb after being born.
In traditional cultures, however, the first six weeks or 40 days after birth are considered to be critical in caring for the mother’s health and well-being. There is no expectation for a new mother to bounce back to “normal” in a few days post birth. In fact, “babying” the new mother with a special diet, selfcare practices and time to connect and be with her newborn is seen as essential to safeguarding her resilience, radiance, happiness and strength as she moves forward into this new chapter in her life.
